Councillor for Winsford Over & Verdin
Lynda, you grew up in a working-class Labour supporting family, in Scotland, but now you’re a passionate Conservative in Whitegate…tell us about your journey.
Yes, my family were very working-class and in those days most people like them were die-hard Labour supporters. I suppose I changed my mind in my early 20s when I realised that Conservatives believe people shouldn’t be pigeon-holed for life – in other words, if you work hard, you can change and improve your circumstances for your family.
And what about your family?
Well I’m married with three children aged between 19 and four! We’ve lived in Cheshire for almost 20 years and in Whitegate since 2000. I was made redundant when I was 24, so I decided the recruitment sector was the best place to work; the rest of my career was spent finding people for jobs and jobs for people.
Describe yourself in three words.
Passionate. Driven. Tenacious.
Why do you want to serve the people of Whitegate?
I really don’t want Whitegate to be forgotten…we must have a voice. There’s plenty that’s good about this area, and I want to ensure we preserve that, but there’s also plenty that needs doing. So give me a task…and I’ll go off and do it!
Why should residents vote for you?
When I say I’ll do something, I do it. That’s very important.
One thing you most want to achieve as a Councillor?
There are many things, but specifically, I want to reduce the amount of traffic that roars through at speed. Whitegate has become a rat-run and this is dangerous and unpleasant.
What should be on your epitaph?
She didn’t wait for someone else to get things done.
What are we least likely to hear you say?
I can’t do that.
What do you understand by The Big Society?
It’s about the very Conservative belief in having control over your own future. For instance some of us thought the road outside the school was dangerous a while back, so we rolled up our sleeves and had it made safer – that’s the Big Society in action.
